When I asked my Instagram followers what it was they wanted me to talk about, many of them asked about which beauty products I use to create my daily look but also for a more glammed-up evening style.
Not so long ago, it was all about creating a desk-to-dancefloor look for week nights, when impromptu meet-ups saw you sipping cocktails with friends during the week (when you didn’t have time to go home and get changed). At that stage of life, I used to keep makeup kits that would double up for work and play, whereas at weekends we would go into all-out pamper mode, creating a specific look for specific occasions while listening to music, drinking fizz with friends and putting the world to rights. Obviously I now have a small human who has put a stop to all of those shenanigans, but I still want to look my best, and so I had something of a beauty bag clear out…
Rather than desk to dancefloor, my go-to look is more dawn-to-bedtime now, and has to include an element of tiredness camouflage, as well as being quick and easy to do – often in minutes because I just don’t have the time like I used to. But the serious makeup junkie still resides within, and I still use and swear by my hero items.
For me it’s ALL about the base – get that right, and you’re off to a very good start. I love a glowing, radiant and flawless look that is more dewy than matte. I don’t use powders anymore because I found as I got into my late 30s they tended to age me, and now at the age of 41 I am doing everything I can to reverse the signs of getting old! I start with one of my absolute faves – Estee Lauder Revisiting Supreme CC Crème for anti-aging. This amazing little bottle of magic matches itself to your skin when applied – it’s so clever. This gives a lovely base and sometimes I wear this on its own – especially in summer for a natural look but with good coverage. For days when I want extra cover, I mostly wear Clarins ‘Sand’ 108. I do have a darker shade for when I sporting a tan in the summer, but this shade works best with my natural skin tone. Finally, to complete the base, I use Mac concealer in NC30.
Once I have my base on, I do a little contouring using my Soigne brushes, with Mac bronzer in A87 ‘dark golden’. Then I add a dash of blusher – Mac’s ‘pinch of peach’ normally. I also love ‘fleur power’ by Mac. To really highlight my cheeks I finish off with Benefit’s high beam on the cheek bones. High beam is my all-time favourite bit of kit – I must have been wearing it for 20 years now. If you purchase only one item from this blog post, make it this – it is a total game changer!
So that’s the base covered and the cheeks, and that literally takes minutes. Next up is the eyes. Most days I am pretty time-poor and now that I have a demanding toddler in tow much of the time. I just use my Benefit high beam as an all-over base on my eyes – it just adds a little shimmer and it delicate and not too glitzy. On the days where I have a little longer I am currently loving the Mac vintage selection pots. You can use them both on the lid and under eye for that smoky eye effect and I love that they are so easy to apply over the traditional pallet. Then it’s a double dash of mascara using Benefit’s roller lash in black.
When it comes to lipsticks, every day could be different because I have them scattered around everywhere. Coat pockets, baby change bags, handbags, the car… Each day tends to bring a change of colour as a result. One thing is for sure, though – it will invariably be Mac and a shade or pink. My favourite shade for evening is lady bug, but a good all-rounder that goes with just about everything, politely pink is the one. So glossy and pretty.
Makeup brushes are so key to your look and kit. I swear by my Soigne set.
So, that’s my current makeup regime rounded up. I have realised that less is more these days. Below is a handy list, and links so that you can add any of these items to your kit. If you have any questions, ask away – I love to talk makeup!
